Elliptical trainer

An elliptical trainer is designed to provide a cardiovascular workout rather than build muscles without causing excessive pressure to the joints, therefore lowering the risk of impact injuries.

There are three different varieties of elliptical trainers, categorized by the motor or “drive” location. The most aged elliptical design is the “rear drive” type. The “front-drive” elliptical was the second production design. The latest concept is the “center-drive”.

Both treadmill and elliptical trainer have their own pro and cons. Treadmill is more suited for someone who prefers running or jogging. However treadmill can be a nightmare for people with joints problems, such as older people or athletes with a knee injury. On the other hand, elliptical trainer is the alternative for people with joint problems because it offers no impact exercises. Moreover, the elliptical trainer provides an upper and lower body workout, unlike the treadmill which focuses only on the lower part of the body. Elliptical machines are growing in popularity and are gaining on treadmills in overall sales.

Ellipticals offer the benefit of a low-impact workout, while exercising both your upper and lower body.

From a study it said that repeated measures analysis of variance determined higher (p < .001) VO2, VE, and RPE, but not HR, during combined arm-leg versus leg-only exercise at any given intensity.
